FSAN is een koepelorganisatie voor de Somalische gemeenschap, opgericht in 1994 en treedt op als de landelijke belangenbehartiger en spreekbuis van de Somalische gemeenschap in Nederland. Zij heeft als hoofddoel: een optimale participatie en integratie van Somaliërs in de Nederlandse samenleving en het versterken van de positie van de Somalische gemeenschap in het algemeen. Dit doet zij middels verschillende projecten, samenwerkingen en organisatorische activiteiten met de hulp van betreffende leden.
De verschillende geluiden van de Somalische gemeenschap neemt de Federatie mee, en helpt met projecten waarmee de Federatie hulp kan bieden. FSAN bestaat ten dele uit professionals die vanuit hun eigen vakgebied met kennis en visie zich inzetten voor de ontwikkeling van landelijke projecten en activiteiten. Op dit moment zijn er 56 lokale Somalische zelforganisaties aangesloten bij FSAN, waarvan het merendeel zich in Nederland bevindt. FSAN probeert de samenwerking tussen de lokale Somalische zelforganisaties te verbeteren en signaleert problemen in de Somalische gemeenschap die het lokale niveau overstijgen.
FSAN speelt sinds eind jaren ‘90 een centrale rol in de bestrijding van Vrouwelijke Genitale Verminking (VGV) in Nederland. De inzet van FSAN was vooral gericht op het trainen van het sleutelpersonen netwerk uit verschillende landen en het trainen van professionals. FSAN organiseert ook voorlichting voor de doelgroep en ontwikkelt VGV- voorlichtingsmateriaal in verschillende talen. Daarnaast fungeert FSAN op het gebied van bestrijding van VGV als advies- en steunpunt voor leden uit de praktiserende gemeenschappen, ketenpartners uit de verschillende instanties, studenten en onderzoekers.
