Meet the Functional Genomics Lab (FunGen), our academic research group on understanding the genetic underpinnings of rare neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) at Ghent University. Rare NDDs represent a diverse group of conditions affecting approximately 2-5% of children globally, impacting the development of the central nervous system. The complexity and variety of NDDs make pinpointing a molecular diagnosis challenging. While recent technological advancements have improved diagnostic rates and unveiled numerous NDD-associated genes, much remains to be discovered.
Our team at FunGen is dedicated to identifying new candidate genes associated with NDDs and elucidating the critical role of regulatory elements in neurodevelopment. To achieve these goals, our lab utilizes a sophisticated suite of technologies, including:
CRISPR-Cas9: This gene editing technology enables us to make precise modifications to DNA, providing insights into gene function.
Neural Organoids: These three-dimensional, human-derived cell cultures serve as invaluable models, allowing us to study the intricacies of the developing human brain in a controlled environment.
Chromatin Conformation Capture Techniques: By analyzing the three-dimensional organization of chromatin within cells, these techniques offer a glimpse into the regulatory landscape of the genome.
RNA-seq: This technology allows us to detect both qualitative and quantitative changes in gene expression, offering crucial information about the dynamic nature of the transcriptome. RNA-seq is proving to be particularly valuable in a diagnostic context, often used to complement exome and whole-genome sequencing.
Through our investigation, FunGen Lab aims to contribute to the development of more effective diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.
