The Future Flight Social Insight (FFSI) research programme is led by researchers at the University of Birmingham who are working with the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Future Flight Challenge (FFC) team. FFSI aims to better understand some of the key social and economic issues relevant to the future of flight. The FFC – a £300 million UKRI programme, jointly funded by the UK government and industry – aims to stimulate the development of these new aviation technologies in the UK.
FFSI is funded through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to deliver a pioneering research program that aims to better understand the future roll-out of electric and hydrogen air vehicles in the UK. These technologies include drones, electric take-off and landing aircraft (EVTOLs), and small, conventional take-off and landing aircraft powered by electric battery or hydrogen for short-haul domestic flights.
The development of these Future Flight innovations have the potential for a complex range of social, economic, and environmental implications. Future Flight Social Insight will utilise independent social and economic researchers from the outset to enable a better understanding of how different groups and organisations from across the UK think about, and may be impacted by or benefit from, these new forms of aviation. Future Flight Social Insight will be vital to understanding socially desirable pathways for the roll-out of these technologies.
FFSI is also building social science research capacity in this area across the UK.
