Das Computerspiel ist das komplexeste Artefakt, von dem die Medienwissenschaft überhaupt handeln kann. Deshalb liegt es nahe, sich Games kooperativ zu nähern.
Die Forscher:innengruppe GamesCoop gründete sich im Umfeld des Teams Medienwissenschaft der Universität Siegen, ursprünglich mit einer engen Fokussierung auf digitale Spiele. Mittlerweile heißt sie auch an anderen Institutionen beheimatete Forschende willkommen, das Forschungsinteresse hat sich auch auf analoge Spiele ausgedehnt. Ziel ist es, die eigene Arbeit in der Spielforschung durch Austausch und Kooperation zu stärken und so die Game Studies als Fach in Lehre und Forschung zu etablieren.
Im Umkreis dieses Projekts entstehen Dissertationen und Habilitationen sowie zahlreiche andere Publikationen.
