We need more data from nature. Humanity needs to bring coherence to the massively fragmented data we have about our planet. How can we protect what we don’t understand? How can we collaborate when we all are looking at different data about the same environmental challenges? The Global Nature Data Engineering Network is an international professional network and research group that works to advance nature data sharing and data-system integration. One of the issues that has drawn the attention of the members of the working groups is the rampant green washing that exists on carbon markets due to the opaque nature of data reporting. Among the many challenges found in this area, the problem of double counting is of particular concern. Therefore, as one of its initial efforts, the Network has created a dedicated task force, The Data Transparency Research Group, which has developed “The Methodology to Avoid Double Counting in Carbon Markets”. The enormous research effort that led to the creation of this methodology is now going to be continued by a global awareness campaign called “NO double counting”, led by the Knowledge Sharing Task Force.
