GREPIT este o iniţiativă dedicată dezvoltării competenţelor tinerilor pasionaţi de calculatoare, prin simularea unui mediu competiţional dar şi colaborativ, provocator şi fascinant, similar cu domeniul IT din secolul XXI.
Competenţele pentru Societatea Informaţională îşi găsesc astfel un creuzet ideal pentru formare, iar aplicaţiile dezvoltate de către participanţi pot constitui startul pentru progresele semnificative în domeniul IT din următorul deceniu.
Fondarea acestui grup a pornit de la ideea că o aplicaţie informatică semnificativă poate fi realizată mai eficient de un grup decât de aceleaşi persoane lucrând individual. În plus, grupul se dezvoltă mult mai repede, ca rezultat al schimbului permanent de cunoştinţe şi competenţe între membri. Astfel, misiunea principală a grupului GREPIT este de a realiza comunităţi de practică, susţinute de întâlniri periodice faţă în faţă, pentru a sprijini tineri din şcoli şi licee în parcursul lor de formare de excelenţă în domeniul IT.
