Advancing Sustainability in Stainless Steel Production: The H2Reuse Project’s Role in Innovating Bright Annealing
In the context of the H2Reuse project, bright annealing—a critical process in the production of seamless stainless steel and nickel alloy precision tubes—is being redefined to align with sustainability and resource efficiency goals. The H2Reuse project focuses on developing innovations that allow for the recovery and reuse of hydrogen (H2) used in the bright annealing process.
Bright annealing, which involves heating tubes in a 100% hydrogen atmosphere at temperatures between 1,040°C and 1,200°C, plays a vital role in reducing surface oxidation, improving corrosion resistance, and enhancing material strength. The controlled use of hydrogen results in a high-quality, bright surface finish and eliminates internal stresses in the tubes. However, the H2Reuse project aims to take this process further by introducing a method to recover atmospheric gases—especially hydrogen—for reuse as fuel.
This innovative approach is currently under development, as hydrogen burners and recovery systems are still in the testing phase, with a focus on improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Once fully implemented, these technologies could drastically reduce the carbon footprint, cut operational costs, and lower resource waste in the bright annealing process. The H2Reuse project is working toward real-world testing of these innovations to ensure they meet both environmental and industrial performance standards.
Through collaboration with companies like Tenova, which operate roller hearth furnace plants using high hydrogen content gases, the H2Reuse project’s results will offer widespread benefits, including lower emissions, greater sustainability, and cost reductions.
