HEATERNAL develops a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) System (TESS) conceived to meet industry needs of constant high temperature (HT) heat in the face of climate and geopolitical urgencies. HEATERNAL’s TES will recover IWH or RE to replace NG. HEATERNAL would allow plants that operate continuously needing HT heat to electrify: plants could convert electricity to heat when it is available in excess and store that heat for use when electricity is not available (i.e., at night). HEATERNAL’s preliminary techno-economic studies suggest that the most economically and ecologically viable solution to store excess renewable electricity for up to 2 days would be to convert the electricity to heat. The consortium gathers 4 energy-intensive European industries from aluminium, ceramics and steel, an engineering/thermal equipment manufacturer and leading research teams in energy storage, materials, modelling, system design, prototyping, LCA, techno-economic assessment and technology transfer to industry.
