Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) typically operate on a continuous basis and are designed to provide a stable and reliable source of electricity. However, they may not always be able to respond quickly to changes in electricity demand or supply due to the associated risks and costs.
One potential solution to this challenge is to integrate HeatWaxeX into existing NPPs. HeatWaveX involves the storage of thermal energy in a material that undergoes a phase change, such as melting or solidification. This allows for the storage of large amounts of energy in a relatively small volume, and the release of that energy when needed. The system can be implemented to existing NPPs to achieve flexibility.
The aim is to use the energy stored during periods of low demand to provide additional electricity during high demand periods, while generating profit. This could be accomplished by using HeatWaveX to cool down the steam from Steam Generator (SG) - bypassing it from the turbine - during the low demand, and to preheat the secondary water before it enters the SG - while closing the steam extraction from the turbine - during the high demand. In this way, the NPP can respond quickly to changes in electricity demand without needing to ramp up or down the reactor itself.
Coupling NPPs with HeatWaveX could give an important contribution to address the mismatch between energy production and demand, while generating new revenue for the plant, increasing its overall efficiency and safety, and saving clean water. This innovative approach allows NPPs to effectively adapt to fluctuations in electricity demand without compromising their core operations.
