One objective is to educate Caregivers on how to unload and safely store firearms to prevent Veteran death by suicide. 70% of Veteran deaths by suicide are committed with their own firearms. While I support our Bill of Rights, we all see the necessity of recoupling responsibility with rights. It's far better to get Veterans out to a legal outdoor gun range than to ignore suicidal ideation reinforced by social isolation and media over consumption.
20 Veteran suicides per day is 20 too many. Men Veterans in rural areas are particularly vulnerable to death by suicide with firearm, and sadly women Veterans die by suicide from other means (Veterans Administration, 2023).
Black Veteran death by suicide exceeds death by combat. Black Veterans are often assumed not to be patriotic, because of their own beliefs, preferences, and culture. This must stop. Denying their Hero status because they don't fit an ideological mold may lead to social isolation, which is one cause of death by suicide (Veterans Administration, 2023).
LGBTQIA+ Veteran death by suicide is not well quantified, but one death by suicide is too many. https://www.patientcare.va.gov/LGBT/ is a recent resource for LGBTQIA+ Veterans (Veterans Administration, 2023).
We must love ourselves and each other to life, and end this culture of death.
