De geschiedenis van het Huis Happaert is er een van ridders en burgemeesters, van professoren, notabelen en kunstenaars. Ze woonden, werkten, bestuurden en bedachten er.
En die grandeur blijft ook vandaag nog moeiteloos overeind.
Toen ridder en burgemeester Jan Happaert rond 1520 de eerste stenen liet stapelen, was Antwerpen nog het centrum van de wereld. Tijdens de hele gouden eeuw bestuurde het geslacht Happaert de binnenstad. Vanuit dit huis. Zelfs toen de Prins van Oranje de macht in Antwerpen overnam, bleven de Happaerts hun stad trouw. Ze zouden burgemeesters leveren tot 1684.
Het huis bleef ook daarna inspiratie bieden – zoals aan professor Couvreur, de laatste bewoner. Hij voerde de commissie aan die in 1954 de spellingsregels vastlegde in het Groene Boekje.
