The Department of Real Estate and Construction (REC), formerly known as Department of Building and Department of Surveying, was established in June 1984. It is rooted in the surveying profession through the professional accreditation of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The Department has now expanded into an even wider spectrum of expertise, covering virtually every aspect of land, construction, real estate, and conservation, with a growing interest in digital technologies and data analytics. REC’s faculty members are committed to producing high-quality research to advance knowledge and make positive impacts on the industry and society. In the 2020 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which assessed research quality by international benchmarks, REC was ranked No.1 in the Built Environment panel – 95% of the submissions for ‘Planning and Surveying’ were rated as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). As of 2021 HKU’s Built Environment is ranked No.14 by QS internationally. Students who wish to conduct world-leading research with us could consider applying for REC’s research degrees: MPhil and PhD. REC is also committed to offering high-quality professional education to students from all over the world with a strong interest in understanding and tackling land, construction, and real estate issues. Four taught degrees are offered: BSc(Surveying), MSc(Real Estate), MSc(Construction Project Management), and MSc(Integrated Project Delivery). Apart from the opportunity to learn from leading academics, students also enjoy access to an extensive alumni network and a wealth of industry resources through case studies (e.g. studio), field trips, internships, and guest lectures by adjunct professors who hold key positions in property developers, real estate funds, professional consultants, building contractors, etc.
