The HOBY New York West chapter was created in 1985. For 31 years, we have held a three-day leadership seminar for high school sophomores from across Western New York, spanning Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Rochester and the Southern Tier. In 2017, over 125 students attended the HOBY New York West Seminar.
HOBY is an international organization that nearly 500,000 students have participated in since founder and actor Hugh O'Brian founded HOBY in 1958. Different chapters hold seminars across the United States and in select countries, including Canada, China, Iraq, and Korea. Last year, HOBY NY West students worked with the collegiate organization Hippies for Hope as they tie-dyed T-shirts and onesies for children battling illnesses who were confined to local hospitals. Students also participated in Rochester Clean Sweep as they worked hard to beautify a section of Mt. Hope Cemetery. Additionally, a group of volunteers visited a local nursing home to facilitate BINGO with the residents.
At the conclusion of our seminar, our students, or ambassadors as we call them, were challenged to complete at least 100 hours of community service in their hometowns. Ambassadors who achieve this milestone receive special recognition by both HOBY and the U.S. President.
We know HOBY works. In the last 3 years, HOBY New York West ambassadors logged nearly 5,000 community service hours via our online system. Additionally, we receive countless messages from alumni about how HOBY changed, challenged and inspired them. Many of these alumni return year after year to our seminar.
