Human Camera CIC is a social enterprise based in Nottingham, UK. Our mission? We want people to understand images so they can better understand the world around them! That’s why each of our projects, workshops and developmental training courses focuses on 'Visual Literacy' - the skill needed to 'read' images.
Photography is our tool: we strongly believe this medium can be a powerful, therapeutic and expressive device, acting as a platform for positivity, learning and self-development. At Human Camera we teach the complexity of visual literacy in simple, understandable ways through basic photography. We bring self-awareness and communication to the forefront of a photographer’s mind, ensuring they take note of the processes going on either side of the camera as well as inside.
We work collaboratively with a range of different organisations to deliver skills and knowledge training to communities and NGOs across the UK and Europe. The aim is to provide the means needed to read messages that are present in every visual image in our society - from advertising on billboards, to pictures in art galleries or the millions of daily uploads to social media.
Ultimately, we believe that photography brings people together, resulting in a unique power to disseminate knowledge and elicit change; things that all people should have the means and access to do.
Human Camera uses photography to teach people how to see the world through open eyes - how to be aware of their surroundings and interpret the messages that are contained within each and every image.
