I-UPS aims to build and demonstrate a first-of-a-kind high temperature heat pump, coupled with energy storage and steam generation.
The project is targeting industrial heat up to 400C. A quarter of global energy demand is industrial heat with nearly 90% of this being produced by non-renewables, generating 40% of global CO2 emissions.
I-UPS enhances system flexibility and sustainability. This initiative positions Europe as a leader in industrial heat pump solutions, promoting energy efficiency, waste heat recovery, and reduced carbon emissions in the industrial sector.
The I-UPS project involves a consortium of five key partners from different countries, each contributing their unique expertise to achieve the project's goals.
The project is coordinated by Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan (KTH) from Sweden, which is responsible for overall project management, research, and technology development.
Enerin AS and Kyoto Group AS, both from Norway, play crucial roles in the development and validation phases of the project. Enerin AS leads the work package focused on developing and adapting the high-temperature heat pump, leveraging their expertise in advanced thermal systems. Kyoto Group AS is responsible for the validation campaign of the integrated I-UPS solution, ensuring that the system works efficiently and reliably in real-world industrial settings.
Università degli Studi di Genova (UNIGE) from Italy and RPOW Consulting SL from Spain. UNIGE contributes to research and technology development, focusing on the optimization of heat pump components and integration strategies. Their role is vital for ensuring that the heat pump operates efficiently and can be seamlessly integrated into existing industrial processes. RPOW Consulting SL provides consulting services, supporting the techno-economic analysis and market integration strategies.
