The CIC-P was created through an agreement between INSERM and the CHU (university hospital) in February 1995, at the behest of Professor Pierre Drouin and Professor Faiez Zannad. The request for the approval of a research centre was submitted in May 1995 and consent was given on 17 October 1995. Staff recruitment began in May 1995 with a full-time secretary and nurse. A significant amount of medical equipment funded by the coordinating doctor and the principal investigator were made available to the CIC-P, in its premises, in August 1995. From May 1995 to October 1995, before obtaining approval as a research centre, the CIC-P’s activities consisted mainly of setting up the team and training staff in Good Clinical Practices, the protection of volunteers involved in biomedical research and the IT procedures. During this period, the budgetary procedures were examined by the CHU's and INSERM’s executive committee. The security procedures were implemented and tried and tested. The CHU’s clinical departments, INSERM units, and several laboratories from the pharmaceutical industry were informed about the CIC-P thanks to a specially designed brochure specific to CIC-P Nancy. It was widely distributed to all partners at several open door events aimed at CHU clinicians, INSERM Nancy researchers and numerous personal contacts with members of the CHU’s ‘Commission Médicale d'Etablissement’ and ‘Commission de Recherche Clinique’, and with members of the faculty board and the university’s board. With the approval of the Technical Committee that was set up, and whose first meeting took place on 5 July 1995, several protocol plans were finalised. While waiting for the approval of the research centre, CIC-P staff were able to continue with the clinical research with direct individual benefit, previously undertaken in the respective clinical departments of the chief investigator and the principal investigator. Actual CIC-P investigations began at the end of October 1995. A mission Situated within care establishments and supported by INSERM (national institute for health and medical research) and hospitals, clinical investigation centres (CIC) lie at the interface between basic research and applied medical research. They aim to produce new scientific and medical knowledge according to ethical and legal rules. Open structures Open to investigators from any institutional or industrial background who want to carry out research : - relating to healthy or sick subjects - on various themes and fields of research: physiology, physiopathology, genetics, therapeutic research, epidemiology, etc. CIC’s objectives - Logistical and technical support to design and conduct the projects - The development of clinical research within the hospital/university community and research laboratories, especially INSERM’s. - The training of doctors, pharmacists and paramedics in clinical research, with the application of good practices and quality assurance.
