Iberagar was created by the merger of two companies, Biomar and AGC, and was established shortly after World War II. In 1970 Iberagar acquired a Japanese company, Unialgas, and transferred its operations to the plant in Barreiro, 30 km from Lisbon
IBERAGAR - Fundada em Agosto de 1964 em Alverca do Ribatejo pela fusão de duas companhias (Biomar e AGC), foi em 1970 que se estabeleceu na margem sul do Tejo (Coina, Barreiro), onde permanece até aos dias de hoje na sequência da aquisição da Sociedade Japonesa Unialgas.
A empresa dedica-se à prospecção e aquisição de matéria primas (algas) para a produção de Agar-agar, um colóide purificado de algas vermelhas do género “Gelidium”, onde se especializou.
Quimicamente o agar é uma molécula complexa que possui um conjunto propriedades particularmente úteis em diversas industrias Alimentar, Farmacêutica e Biotecnológicas.
