The Institute for Central-Eastern and Balkan Europe (IECOB) is an independent research and analysis centre, legally recognized, and included by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research in the National Research Register among the “Special Scientific Institutes”. The Institute was founded in 1995, only two years after the advent of the “Europe and the Balkans International Network” (EBIN), bringing together around 250 scholars from 36 European countries, the United States, Canada, Egypt, South Africa, India, Japan and Australia, which constitutes the Academic Board of the Institute and guarantees an international dimension to all its initiatives. In December 1995, the organization was granted full non-profit status in Bologna, Italy. IECOB has since received strong support from the University of Bologna, the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Region of Emilia-Romagna, and the City Councils of Forlì, Cervia and Bologna, as well as from the main banking foundations of Emilia-Romagna. Today, IECOB is a leading institute for research and training regarding Central Eastern and Balkan Europe, focused on topics ranging from politics, economics, and law to language, culture, and diplomacy. Since 1995, IECOB has contributed to the training of more than 2.500 students at undergraduate and graduate level by promoting summer schools, MA Programs, and vocational courses organized both on its own and through cooperation with the University of Bologna. IECOB has a cooperation agreement with the Department of Political and Social Science of the University of Bologna.
