In 1998 Codelco Chile decided to create IM2 considering: the need of an organization with a unique identity, autonomy and capacity to conduct research and innovation in mining and metallurgy in order to:

Being watched by Codelco as an excellence and world-class Institute, in the development of technological solutions, with multidisciplinary teams of professionals, leaders and referents in their disciplines, and in the performance of its mission, to enhance the interaction between industry and academy .
