Indian Samaritans is a national voluntary organization serving children since 2006 and registered as a trust in 2013. Samaritans are constituted by a team of inspired individuals who are committed to addressing the issue of school dropouts, child trafficking, child sexual abuse, and early child marriage among girl children. According to the government official reports, only around 10% of children in India get higher education opportunities and 47% of girl children get married before they are 18 years. These result in a growing number of child labour and numerous health problems to these children including affecting their brain development. The aim of Indian Samaritans is to reduce dropouts and delay the marriage among girl children.
The real-life situation of children in large urban cities
The education system in India is such that the majority of the children from the underprivileged sector drop out before completing basic education.
1. Parents living in urban slum depend on daily work and wages that begins early in the morning and ends the late evening.
2. Children start their classes in the school early in the morning but end early afternoon.
3. The time between afterschool and parent’s return in the late evening makes many children vulnerable and easy prey for child sexual abuse, child labor, and various exploitations; they do not get a suitable situation to study and prepare for classes and progress in their education process.
4. Parents who are illiterate don’t have the skills to help their children and in such a situation children don’t get the opportunity to prepare for the classes, exams and thus leads to dropout from the education system.
What Indian Samaritans do?
1. Work with the vulnerable communities living in unauthorized colonies and the homeless in large cities in India. Identify children between the age of 4 and 14 who are either in the school or the ones dropouts or never been in education system but willing to start or resume their education.
