Das Interkantonale Labor (IKL) ist eine unselbständige öffentlich-rechtliche Anstalt der drei Partnerkantone Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden und Schaffhausen. Das IKL vollzieht das
- Lebensmittel- und Gebrauchsgegenständerecht in allen drei Kantonen;
- Chemikalien- und Umweltschutzrecht im Kanton Schaffhausen;
- Gastgewerbe- und Handelsreisendenrecht im Kanton Schaffhausen.
Das IKL, früher bekannt als das "Kantonale Labor", kontrolliert also nicht nur Lebensmittel, einschliesslich Trinkwasser, sondern auch Gebrauchsgegenstände wie beispielsweise Geschirr, Verpackungsmaterialien für Lebensmittel, Kosmetika, Textilien. Parallel dazu setzt es sich mit Fragen der Erhaltung unseres Lebensraumes auseinander. Dabei geht es sowohl um den Schutz der natürlichen Ressourcen Wasser, Luft und Boden, als auch um die Eindämmung der negativen Auswirkungen unserer hochindustrialisierten Zivilisation: Stoffe, Abfälle, Gifte, Lärm, Strahlung usw.
