L'Institut de Rééducation Audio-Phonétique, connu sous le nom IRAP, a été fondé en 1960 par un groupe de volontaires qui a ressenti le besoin de créer des liens spirituels et humains avec des personnes handicapées de tous âges et de tous horizons. En 1962, l’Institut se consacre aux enfants et adolescents sourds. En 1963, s'ouvre la première classe d'enfants sourds, équipée d'appareils électroniques modernes, d'avant-garde pour l'époque.
En 1968, l’IRAP s’est implanté à Aïn Aar, Metn-Nord, dans une ancienne maison libanaise aux tuiles rouges, compensant l’exigüité du premier foyer à Jisr el Bacha. Depuis, l’IRAP s’est agrandit, au fil du temps et selon les besoins. Actuellement, il occupe un terrain de 10.000 m2 répartit en plusieurs bâtiments, lieux de multiples activités.
L'IRAP est reconnu par le Ministère de l'Intérieur comme une association à but non lucratif, spécialisée dans la prise en charge éducative, au service des enfants et des jeunes sourds. (Licence N° 24 AD, en date du 20 janvier 1975).
IRAP – Institut de Réeducation Audio-Phonétique was founded in 1960. During this period, a group of volunteers felt themselves compelled to establish spiritual and human ties with disabled people of all ages and from all regions in Lebanon. A “Home” was erected for the whole community to lead this experience. It was a centre where all the community met and lived at the same time.
Gradually since 1962, the idea to offer a more specialized service especially in terms of the precise domain of children with auditory deficiencies took shape.
In 1963, the first session and class catering for deaf children was initiated. It was equipped with the latest and most sophisticated electronic devices available during that period. In this respect, the Ministry of Social Affairs signed an agreement with IRAP to provide subsidized financial support for technical and social collaboration assisting with a subsidized financial program.
