De zes scholen verschillen in omvang, onderwijsaanbod en cultuur. IRIS verbindt de scholen door een gezamenlijke onderwijsvisie waarin veiligheid, invloed en aandacht kernbegrippen zijn. De ruim 7000 leerlingen krijgen onderwijs in een vertrouwde en veilige omgeving die houvast biedt en bijdraagt aan de ontwikkeling naar zelfstandig functioneren in de maatschappij.
De IRIS-scholen zijn sinds 2010 erkend als (academische) opleidingsschool. Dit heeft een aanzuigende werking op 'docenten in opleiding' en startende (on)-bevoegde docenten en is een stimulans bij het verkrijgen en behouden van professioneel en gemotiveerd zittend personeel. Opleiden en ontwikkelen staan hoog op de agenda, docenten worden gestimuleerd in hun persoonlijke groei en ontwikkeling. Het delen van kennis, leren van elkaar, is hier een wezenlijk onderdeel van. Uitgangspunt is dat de docenten stuk voor stuk professionals zijn, die respect en verantwoordelijkheidsbesef centraal stellen.
