Hi, I’m Sara Suttle, publisher, editor, and designer of JaggedLines magazine and social platform. I launched this magazine that, along with the community that has fueled, helps parents of autistic children find and understand the resources they need to help their children. JaggedLines is designed to provide support to parents of children on the spectrum, so they can experience less stress, feel emotionally connected, and can actively participate in their child’s journey, thus creating a better outcome for their child’s future. Parenting children on the spectrum requires a multidimensional approach. To respond to the varied needs of their child, first, parents must develop both depth and breadth of knowledge of child development and understand the role of professionals (e.g., educators, service providers) and social systems (e.g., institutions, laws, policies) that interact with and support them. Additionally, to be able to help their child, parents also must learn how the disability affects him/her/them. I started this business after realizing how easier it would have been to raise and help my son, had I known what I know today. I wanted to provide parents of children on the spectrum with the support and comprehensive information I needed at the time and had a hard time finding it. Focusing on parent’s education as a point of intervention has shown to have a positive impact on their quality of life and their child’s. I chose a magazine to do this because it is the perfect medium that allows both creative freedom and is the best way of expressing my passion for helping parents of ASD children. The community that has fueled is just the result of the magazine’s ability to attract and motivate people who feel represented by it. Professionally, I have been working as communications consultant for small businesses and nonprofits and was an autism teacher for Fairfax County public schools for a few years.
