jugendschutz.net wurde 1997 als Stelle aller Bundesländer durch die Jugendminister:innen gegründet und handelt mit gesetzlichem Auftrag. Die Aufgaben sind im Jugendmedienschutz-Staatsvertrag (JMStV) festgelegt.
Seit 2003 ist unsere Institution organisatorisch an die Kommission für Jugendmedienschutz (KJM) angebunden. Inzwischen fungieren wir auch als gemeinsames Kompetenzzentrum von Bund und Ländern für den Schutz von Kindern und Jugendlichen im Internet.
Mit Inkrafttreten der Novelle des Jugendschutzgesetzes (JuSchG) im Mai 2021 wurde dem gemeinsamen Kompetenzzentrum jugendschutz.net auch eine gesetzliche Aufgabe auf Seite des Bundes zugeschrieben.
jugendschutz.net wird finanziert von den Obersten Landesjugendbehörden, den Landesmedienanstalten und gefördert vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend.
