In 1968 is de sociëteit De Schuit ontstaan vanuit de Gereformeerde Kerk te Katwijk aan Zee. De sociëteit lag gesitueerd in de toenmalige Irenezaal van de Vredeskerk. Al gauw bleek het pand niet geschikt te zijn voor de sociëteit.
Rond 1980 kwam het aanbod van de gemeente om in de oude bibliotheek aan de Voorstraat het pand te betrekken. Op 18 november 1983 werd dit pand officieel geopend als nieuw onderkomen van De Schuit. Na de ingrijpende verbouwing in 2012 is het pand zoals het in de huidige staat is.
Organisatie
De Schuit is op donderdag, vrijdag en zaterdag geopend en er worden per weekend gemiddeld meer dan 100 bezoeken afgelegd. Dit betekent dat er op organisatorisch vlak dan ook het één en ander moet gebeuren. Naast het programmeren en organiseren van allerlei activiteiten moeten er bestellingen gemaakt worden, de inkomsten en uitgaven afhandelen, roosters maken, vergaderen, schoonmaken, toezicht houden, hulp bij de bar en de deur, etc.
Om al deze taken ordelijk te laten verlopen zijn er een aantal commissies opgericht. De commissies verschillen sterk in het aantal vrijwilligers omdat dit afhangt van de omvang van de taken van de commissie.
