Kaleo, a new Kiwi clothing brand and shop located in Kerikeri, is making waves in the Bay of Islands. With a focus on expressive New Zealand fabric prints and relaxed styles, Kaleo Designs is becoming a must-visit destination for locals and Bay of Islands visitors alike. The unique and defining feature of Kaleo is their NZ-inspired fabric prints which are created by local artists. All the designs are original and capture the essence of the things we love the most about Aotearoa. These prints are then used to create Kaleo’s custom apparel and other products, blending creativity, comfort and quality into everything they make. “ We want to put NZ art into what you wear every day. Our designs resonate with our customers because they express something familiar, fun… but most importantly something local”, owner Christine Makaweo shares. Each piece of clothing is a work of art — and a canvas for personal expression. A visit to Kaleo is like visiting an art gallery of sorts, except you can buy the art in wearable form. Kaleo has collaborated with 15 different NZ artists thus far on their initial designs, and is continually looking to work with new artists to create fresh designs each season. One of the standout items in Kaleo's clothing line is their Classic Mens Shirts, inspired by the famous “Hawaiian Shirt”, but done Kiwi style. Coming from Hawaii, Christine has a good understanding of what makes a really great shirt. “ The imagery should bring back a special memory or favourite pastime. The style should be timeless and tasteful (no fast fashion here). And above all, they need to be easy-care ( no ironing) and comfortable to wear ”.
