Founded in 2013, Kids in Care ACT is dedicated to advancing the social and emotional wellbeing of vulnerable local children, especially those living in poverty, crisis, or within the care system. We provide new toys, passes to local attractions, Go Bags, clothing, emergency supplies, and other comforts. We are a volunteer run, incorporated association and a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. Our area is the ACT and surrounding NSW regions. Founded by ACT Policing’s Detective Sergeant John Giles, our mission began with ensuring children in care had Christmas presents. Since then, we’ve grown significantly thanks to our dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors. For the Financial Year 2024–2025, we provided over 1,000 toys, more than 300 Go Bags, and store vouchers to CYF, DCJ, local Domestic Violence Centres, Refuges, ACT Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Legal Aid ACT. We also funded Women’s Legal Centre ACT’s new family room. We respond to requests from ACT Children, Youth and Families, NSW Department of Communities & Justice, local police stations, domestic violence and women’s refuges, Indigenous support services, legal and mental health services, and other community groups. Support includes gifts for special occasions, school supplies, gift vouchers, bikes, trampolines, and passes to local attractions such as cinemas or zoos. Fundraisers during the year include Bunnings BBQs, Super Toys and Hobbies Community Fun Day, Easter and Christmas Raffles, gift wrapping stations and Giving Trees at Christmas.
