KNOWtime Commuter Technology Development (“KNOWtime”) was established as a Federal Non-Profit in November 2013. The KNOWtime concept is the product of our team’s successful participation in Volta and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM)’s Open Data Hackathon (September 2013) aimed at encouraging Internet-based solutions for community-identified issues. KNOWtime’s transit app for Smartphones uses crowd-sourced location (GPS) data to share real-time bus tracking information between riders using Halifax Metro Transit. Our mission is to “create better cities by leveraging commuter empowerment and becoming the connector between people, operations and infrastructure.” Mobile technology serves as our platform for making important community contributions. We have been able to demonstrate that KNOWtime empowers commuters by putting them in control of their commute. By enhancing the transit experience, it is feasible to expect increased ridership resulting in: commuters saving time and money, decreased traffic congestion and emissions, increased parking availability, and increased access to spaces, places, businesses and events. Our goal of promoting technical, social, economic and environmental value through the provision of accessible and people-centric solutions reflects the tenets of social enterprise models. We are committed to building stronger, smarter communities by achieving a blended return on investment. KNOWtime is supported and maintained by five of the original co-founders (who incorporated as a Federal Nonprofit in November 2013). We are a group of motivated volunteers whose training and experience include health research, technology development, library science, graphic design and business strategy. KNOWtime receives support from a skilled advisory group including representatives from the National Research Council, Invest Atlantic, and Dalhousie University’s Social Media Lab.
