Sinds 1824
De historie van de KNRM gaat terug tot 1824. Het redden van schipbreukelingen was in 1824 geen vanzelfsprekendheid. Pas na een scheepsramp en een zeldzame reddingspoging, waarbij zes redders verdronken, ontstond een georganiseerd reddingswezen met reddingstations langs de kust.
Sinds het ontstaan van de KNRM in 1824 hebben vrijwilligers zich ingezet om met gevaar voor eigen leven mensen in nood op zee te redden. De verhalen daarover zijn soms bloedstollend spannend. Dat vrijwilligers daartoe in staat waren – en nog steeds zijn – heeft te maken met moedig optreden en met steeds beter reddingmaterieel, waarmee de redders naar zee konden.
