In 1912 werd de NVB opgericht als de Nederlandse Vereniging van Bibliothecarissen en Bibliotheekambtenaren en de toenmalige argumenten daarvoor zijn anno nu nog steeds valide: men had behoefte aan uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring, aan contacten met collegae, men wilde dat de belangen werden behartigd bij beleidsontwikkeling op nationaal en internationaal niveau, dat er werd geluisterd naar wensen uit het beroepsveld met betrekking tot opleiding. Oorspronkelijk telde de Vereniging leden afkomstig van alle bibliotheektypen, inclusief openbare bibliotheken, hoewel er daarvoor een aparte vereniging bestond, de in 1908 opgerichte Centrale Vereniging voor Openbare Bibliotheken (CV).
In 2012 bestond de NVB honderd jaar en kreeg het predicaat Koninklijk, in 2013 veranderd de naam NVB naar KNVI.
