Landdistrikternes Fællesråd blev etableret i 1997. Stifterne var Komité for Landsbyer og Landdistrikter, Landsforeningen af Landsbysamfund og foreningen Landsbyerne i Danmark. Baggrunden var en generel interesse, bl.a. fra Indenrigsministeriets side for en fællesrepræsentation. Thorkild Ljørring Pedersen var formand for fællesrådet i flere år. Efter ham fulgte Lone Andersen, nuværende viceformand i Landbrug & Fødevarer, mens formanden siden 2008 er Steffen Damsgaard, opstillet af LandboUngdom.
Fællesrådet er en almennyttig, partipolitisk neutral interesseorganisation, der varetager fælles opgaver og interesser for danske landdistrikter og yderområder. Medlemmerne tæller en række landsdækkende organisationer, 56 kommuner, de lokale aktions-grupper (LAG/FLAG) samt et større antal landsbyer og landdistriktsråd.
Udover funktionen som interesseorganisation fungerer Landdistrikternes Fællesråd som national sparringspartner på landdistriktsområdet for Folketinget og centraladministrationen i henhold til årlige mål- og resultatplaner med Plan- og Landdistriktsstyrelsen.
