Lighthouse began in 1987 when Christians came together from different churches in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, after they felt God was calling them to work with young people in their area.
Since then, Lighthouses have sprung up at locations across Buckinghamshire and increasingly nationwide, offering the same model of a non-residential, 5-day, children’s activity programme.
Lighthouse Central was formed in 2016 as an umbrella organisation, providing support, teaching materials and guidance on safeguarding and safety to the Lighthouses that run as independent charities.
Innovation has been key to Lighthouse’s success, such as offering support for children with special educational needs and by helping to build communities through establishing a presence in deprived, multi-ethnic areas.
Apart from Lighthouse Central’s director, Lighthouse continues to be an all voluntary organisation, with 3,000 adult and teenage volunteers helping to host the activity weeks annually for 5,000 children aged 4-11.
Parents love that Lighthouse offers children a week of safe, structured and supervised fun, with positive moral teaching; their kids love having a fantastic time!
