Seit 1999 forscht das Mainzer Medieninstitut e.V. (MMI) im nationalen, europäischen und internationalen Medienrecht. Das Institut berät Politik, Unternehmen und Verbände unabhängig durch Erstellung von Studien, Gutachten und wissenschaftlichen Stellungnahmen zu Fragen des Rundfunk-, Telemedien-, Presse-, Urheber-, Telekommunikations-, Wettbewerbs-, Informations- und Datenschutzrechts. Regelmäßige Veranstaltungen wie das „Mainzer Mediengespräch“, das „Mainz Media Forum“ und das „Brüsseler Mediengespräch“ bieten ein Forum für aktuelle Debatten in Wissenschaft und Praxis.
In Kooperation mit der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz bietet das MMI den Masterstudiengang Medienrecht (LL.M.) an. Im Rahmen des Studiengangs können außerdem die theoretischen Kenntnisse für den Fachanwalt Urheber- und Medienrecht und den Fachanwalt für Informationstechnologierecht erworben werden.
