The Making Smart Cities Initiative aims to make cities more inclusive, open, intelligent and resilient by supporting the development and implementation of integrated strategies and planning.
To this end, the Initiative focuses on three contexts (Urban and Disaster Risk Reduction, Socioeconomic Development, and Environment and Sustainability) supported by methodologies, technologies and software, and in the Prevention, Preparation, Response and Reconstruction phases.
It also incorporates different international agreements made by the UN, such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030; the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; Paris Agreement on Climate Change; New Urban Agenda - Habitat III; and Agenda for Humanity - World Humanitarian Summit.
In 2014, we started from a base project with the objective of impacting around 3 million people in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas, and today we directly and indirectly impact tens of millions of people around the world. We are determined to make the world a better place for everyone in a responsible, sustainable and inclusive way.
With this work we have reached a level of global excellence. We received important recognition from the UN, being considered a global reference in public-private partnership, in ESG+R (pioneers in this topic) and in the UN concept of Coherence. In 2019 we received the UN Sasakawa Prize. We play leadership roles linked to the UN. Vice-Chair of the Global Board of the UNDRR Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE) (2020-2023), we led the ARISE delegation at the Midterm Review of the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 held in NY (2023), Member of the UNDRR ARISE Global Board (2017-2023), Co-Chair of the UNDRR Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM) (2019-2021) and Member of the UNDRR ARISE Advisory Board (2015-2017). We are currently Co-Chair Emeritus of the UNDRR Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM).
