In the Vaud Riviera, the Manoir de Ban rises up on the heights of Corsier-sur-Vevey, a charming winemaking village halfway between Lausanne and Montreux. Its 14-hectare estate lies in a magnificent landscape, between the vineyard of Lavaux (a UNESCO heritage site), Lake Geneva and the Alps.
In late 1952, enchanted by the extensive views of Lake Geneva and its tranquil surroundings, Charlie Chaplin, unjustly victimised by the McCarthy witch-hunts in America, moved to the Manoir de Ban. He lived there for 25 years, until his death in 1977. Chaplin spent a great deal of time with his wife and children, received friends and celebrities from all over the world, and continued to work unstintingly. This was where he wrote the screenplays for the films A King in New York, A Countess from Hong Kong and The Freak, the last film he ever shot. He composed music to accompany his silent films, and published two autobiographies.
