Basketball in Bayreuth hat seit 40 Jahren eine lange und auch erfolgreiche Historie, davon 25 Jahre in der höchsten deutschen Liga, der Basketball Bundesliga. In der Region zählt Basketball zur Sportart Nr. 1.
Der Gewinn der Deutschen Meisterschaft und des Pokals in der Saison 88/89 unter dem damaligen Namen Steiner Bayreuth markiert den bisher größten Erfolg.
Kontinuierliche Arbeit und voranschreitende Professionalisierung des Clubs in den letzten Jahren haben dazu geführt, dass medi bayreuth heute wirtschaftlich und sportlich auf sehr gesunden Beinen steht und als
Aushängeschild weit über die Region hinaus gilt. Pro Jahr besuchen mehr als 90.000 Zuschauer die Spiele von medi bayreuth, weitere 20.000 verfolgen die Spiele in Live Übertragungen auf Magenta Sport.
Seit der Saison 17/18 bewegt sich medi bayreuth auf Grund der sportlichen Erfolge, auch auf dem internationalen Parkett und spielt in der Basketball Champions League sowie dem FIBA Europe Cup gegen namhafte Gegner aus ganz Europa. Einzige Ausnahme ist hier bedingt durch COVID 19 die Spielzeit 20/21.
