Το Μετσόβιο Κέντρο Διεπιστημονικής Έρευνας (ΜΕ.Κ.Δ.Ε.) ιδρύθηκε το 1993 από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (Ε.Μ.Π.). Από το 2015 αποτελεί διασχολικό εργαστήριο του Ε.Μ.Π. Η ίδρυση και λειτουργία του αποτελεί συμβολική πράξη επιστροφής μέρους του χρέους του Ε.Μ.Π. στην πατρίδα των ιδρυτών και μεγάλων ευεργετών του Πολυτεχνείου. Πρόκειται για το μόνο ερευνητικό κέντρο στην Ελλάδα που εξειδικεύεται στις ορεινές περιοχές, σε μια χώρα, της οποίας η επικράτεια είναι πάνω από 70% ορεινή. Το ΜΕ.Κ.Δ.Ε. στοχεύει στο ζωντάνεμα της ορεινής Ελλάδας σε υγιείς βάσεις, την ισότιμη συμμετοχή των ορεινών και απομονωμένων κοινωνιών στις ευκαιρίες ανάπτυξης και στην προστασία των ευαίσθητων ορεινών οικοσυστημάτων. Η εμβάθυνση της γνώσης για τα βουνά είναι σήμερα μια παγκόσμια προτεραιότητα. Τα βουνά του κόσμου υποφέρουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τα ίδια προβλήματα, η αντιμετώπιση των οποίων είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για την ισορροπία του πλανήτη.
