The Mpule Foundation was established in 1999 to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Foundation was officially launched by former President of South Africa and Global Statesman, Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, former President of Botswana Sir Ketumile Masire and Lady Gladys Masire.
The Mpule Foundation mobilized US$100 Million of Public-Private Partnerships, and partnered with Harvard AIDS Institute, the United Nations, Bristol Myers Squibb, Merck, African Youth Alliance, CDC, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, and other stakeholders to launch intervention programs that impact 500,000 lives.
In 2012, during the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, the Foundation was relaunched with a new vision to scale impact and lessons learned in Botswana across Africa, and to drive greater focus to the linkages between health, nutrition, food security, agriculture and livelihoods.
In 2013, the Foundation launched the Mpule Institute for AI, an applied research unit focused on data-driven evidence-based policies to empower Africa's smallholder farmers and rural communities. The Institute also launched a gender equality mainstreaming pillar, to champion gender equality in agriculture and close the persistent gender gap.
In 2014 the Mpule Institute collaborate with GlobalG.A.P and other stakeholders to launch the Declaration of Abu Dhabi for Global Food Security.
