Medical Research Council (MRC) MitoCluster, a consortium of leading fundamental and clinical scientists, consists of experts from University College London, the University of Cambridge, MRC-Mitochondrial Biology Unit, Newcastle University, EBI-EMBL, and the University of Padua, Italy. Our team specialises in mitochondrial genetics, mitochondrial biology, mitochondrial genome editing, mitochondrial mouse models, and clinical trials related to primary mitochondrial diseases (PMDs). We work alongside other disease-focused clusters as part of the MRC National Mouse Genetics Network led by Professor Owen Sansom. The Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell serves as the central hub for the Network, and is the UK's national facility for mouse genetics and the preclinical study of human diseases using mouse models.
The primary aim of MitoCluster is to provide new insights, biomarkers, and therapies for PMDs. In addition, we strive to better understand the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in various human conditions, including neurodegeneration, cancer, and aging. To achieve these goals, we are developing and validating a clinically relevant, mitochondria-focused, mouse phenotyping platform at the Mary Lyon Centre. Our work will also generate new mouse models harbouring pathogenic mitochondrial DNA variants using mitochondrial genome editing technology.
