Created in 1875, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the oldest in the country, was initially called the national museum, an institution dedicated to history and natural sciences. Its first director was the German scientist Adolfo Ernst, who initiated the constitution and management of the collections that make up its heritage. In 1940, the contemporary stage of the Museum began with the transfer to its current headquarters, the first public building designed by Carlos Raúl Villanueva. This construction of neoclassical influence, has reliefs and sculptures by Francisco Narváez and was declared a national heritage in 1994 for its historical and architectural importance. The Museum collections house more than 100,000 pieces and specimens that are national heritage. Archaeology: it is the largest collection of the Museum, with almost 90 thousand representative pieces of the most varied ancestral cultural manifestations of Venezuela. Physical Anthropology: It includes more than 45,000 specimens, mummies, deformed skulls and numerous human bone remains. Ethnography: It is the oldest, largest, and most scientifically valuable collection in terms of national indigenous culture and also brings together approximately 700 pieces from the African continent. Paleontology: Nearly 10,000 animal fossils and plant footprints in rocks make up this collection that includes: Mammoth molars, giant crocodile jaws, and many other fauna remains. Herpetology: it is the most representative and numerous collection of amphibians and reptiles in the country. Ichthyology: Approximately 5 thousand specimens. Theriology: Approximately 1,600 complete specimens. Invertebrates: More than 14 thousand specimens. Ornithology: Nearly 5,000 specimens. Mineralogy: More than 4 thousand rocks and minerals. The Museum offers an extensive program of activities for learning and entertainment alternatives, a Documentation Center, Reading Room and “Infocenter”.
