Il Museo MA*GA, ufficialmente istituito nel 1966 con il nome di Civica Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Gallarate, nasce con le opere acquisite durante le prime otto edizioni del Premio Nazionale Arti Visive Città di Gallarate, fondato da Silvio Zanella nel 1949 e ancora oggi attivo.
Anno di svolta per la storia del museo è il 2009, in cui la città di Gallarate costituisce la Fondazione “Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Silvio Zanella” che ha come soci fondatori il Comune stesso, il Ministero della Cultura, e soci cofondatori Regione Lombardia e Provincia di Varese.
Nel marzo del 2010, il Museo acquisisce il nome MA*GA - Museo d’Arte Gallarate e inaugura la nuova sede museale che grazie ai suoi ampi spazi favorisce una proposta culturale varia e aperta per offrire un supporto conoscitivo al patrimonio del Museo e per rendere il pubblico partecipe e attento alle tematiche evidenziate, denunciate ed espresse dall’arte dei nostri giorni.
