NanoInjection Technologies LLC was formed in 2009 to develop a new technology invented at Brigham Young University for introducing genetic material into a zygote in order to obtain transgenic animals. This new technology was conceived to replace the microinjection pipettes that have been in use for several decades in the generation of transgenic animals.
Initial work at BYU focused on an integrated MEMS device (microelectromechanical system) that would corral and hold a zygote in place, then pierce the zygote with a lance upon which genetic material was held under the influence of a positive charge to attract the phosphate backbone of the genetic material. NanoInjection Technologies commenced development in 2010 of a standalone cell restrainer and a standalone lance in addition to its ongoing development of the integrated MEMS system.
