Het NA-programma, gebaseerd op volledige onthouding van alle drugs, staat open voor iedereen die worstelt met een verslaving. De leden, die anoniem blijven en alleen met hun voornaam bekend zijn, ondersteunen elkaar in een sfeer van gelijkwaardigheid, zonder angst voor sociale repercussies.
Lidmaatschap van NA is kosteloos. Het is geen religieus programma, maar het benadrukt spirituele principes zoals eerlijkheid, openheid van geest en bereidwilligheid.
