In the NZDF, it is leadership above all else that impacts the most on achieving operational success. Leadership is threaded through every dimension of our operations and organisation, so it is important that we all have a shared and common understanding of the idea. This knowledge has now been formally been articulated in our new Leadership Doctrine, ‘NZDDP 00.06 Leadership’. The Doctrine explains NZDF’s philosophical and conceptual approach to leadership, discusses what successful leadership looks like, and outlines how the NZDF develops its leaders. Building leadership capability continues to be vitally important for the NZDF. To meet the vision of Strategy25 to be an integrated Defence Force, our people need to be agile and forward focused to deliver operational effects. Articulated in the Leadership Doctrine, NZDF’s Leadership Framework (LF) and Leadership Development System (LDS) are a key enabler that allow us to develop our people, build strong relationships to achieve a combined effect, and build ways of working that bring us together. Our Leadership Doctrine is taught through a range of LDS Programmes and Courses, delivered by the Institute for Leader Development as well as the Royal NZ Navy Leadership Development Centre, the Army Training and Doctrine Centre, and the Royal NZ Air Force Command and Recruit Training Squadron. These opportunities are open to all ranks and civilians in the NZDF and to external participants.
