The UCAT Consortium is committed to fairness in selection to medicine and dentistry and to the widening participation in medical and dental training of under-represented social groups.
We are a charity and limited company (registered under the name UKCAT Consortium) managed by a Consortium of Universities who require our tests for entry to their medical / dental programmes.
We were established in 2006 by admission tutors in response to university concerns about the difficulties of selecting fairly from increasing numbers of high achieving applicants. Our aims are to:
- achieve greater fairness in selection by helping schools discriminate between candidates with equivalent qualifications
- widen participation in medical and dental training of under-represented social groups
- identify the characteristics in applicants which will make them good dentists and doctors
Through our partner, Pearson VUE, we deliver our tests on an annual basis to over 29,000 candidates.
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), is used by the majority of UK university Medical and Dental Schools as part of their admission processes.
The test helps universities to make more informed choices from amongst the many highly-qualified applicants who apply for their medical and dental degree programmes.
The UCAT ensures that the candidates who apply to universities have the most appropriate mental abilities, attitudes and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. Through an evolving programme of research the UCAT Consortium seeks to identify the applicant characteristics associated with good dentists, doctors and clinicians.
The test measures candidate performance in verbal, quantitative and abstract reasoning, and decision making. Alongside these tests of cognitive ability, the final section is a situational judgement test (SJT) measuring the traits of integrity, team working and perspective taking.
