Onoway Regional Fire Services is Canada's first private municipal fire service. Onoway Regional is a volunteer paid on call fire service contracted by the town of Onoway and the summer villages of Alberta Beach, Val Quentin, Sunset Point, Silver Sands, South View, Castle Island, Yellowstone, Nakamun Park and Ross Haven. Onoway Regional Fire Services (ORFS) is supported by its separate parent company North West Fire Rescue & Training (NWFR). North West Fire Rescue is an industrial safety company that offers a wide range of services including fire suppression, decontamination, medical standby and other safety services in the oil industry. ORFS's daily operations are directly managed by North West Fire's highly educated and experienced career officers. What makes Onoway Regional unique it is a hybrid/composite fire department, meaning that it is run by our volunteer firefighters as well as North West Fire Rescue's full-time and career industrial firefighters. North West's industrial fire fighters live on station during their contracted rotation, currently two weeks on two weeks off. During a full-timer's rotation they may find themselves waiting at station for their next industrial assignment, since that firefighter is living on station they would also respond to any municipal emergency calls side by side with our regular community volunteers. All ORFS employees are required to have a minimum standard of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I, before starting active service. ORFS and NWFR provide a multitude of internationally accredited courses, free of cost to any member of the community within 30 KMs of one of our stations in exchange for a signed commitment contract usually consisting of one year of service.
