Die osteolabs GmbH ist eine Ausgründung aus dem GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel.
Hier entstand die Idee, mit Hilfe von Spurenelementen im menschlichen Körper eine bisher nicht mögliche Früherkennung des individuellen Osteoporose-Risikos zu erreichen und darüber hinaus Therapieerfolge messbar zu machen. Meeresforscher des GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrums für Ozeanforschung Kiel haben gemeinsam mit Medizinern des Universitätsklinikums Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) auf der Basis einer aus der Meeresforschung stammenden Analysemethode ein Früherkennungsverfahren für Veränderungen in der Knochencalciumbilanz entwickelt, das eine frühestmögliche Aussage erlaubt. „Wir verwenden eine Analysemethode für Calciumisotope, die nur Urin oder Blut für die Untersuchung benötigt“, so Prof. Dr. Anton Eisenhauer, Meeresforscher und wissenschaftlicher Leiter der osteolabs GmbH. Der Ansatz stieß von Anfang an auf hohes Interesse und wurde von mehreren öffentlichen und privaten Institutionen gefördert.
