Osteoporosis, as a progressive and chronic metabolic bone disease, causes more than 8 million fractures annually (1 every 3 seconds). Furthermore, significant drop-out rates in exercises and moderate adherence to drug therapies are reported, placing the need for patients’ long-term sustained motivation, via personalized coaching. OsteoMentor proposes a novel ICT-based approach, by introducing the “virtual mentor” concept for the enhancement of osteoporosis patients’ quality of life, assisting them in physical exercise, nutrition, medication control, bone fracture/fall prevention, emotional wellness and socialization, by introducing new ways of healthcare self-management tools, set within a collaborative care context with health professionals. To achieve this, awareness initiatives will be employed, so as to construct OsteoMentor community, so to unobtrusively sense large scale behavioral data from its members, acquired via everyday smart devices and privacy-aware internet of thing setting. From these Cloud-based data, users’ behavioral and emotional profiles will be inferred, using machine learning and affective computing, enabling the development of user-centric, data-driven coaching recommendations, with minimal effort needed from them. OsteoMentor introduces a humanized, emotion- and social-aware coaching interface, with natural language communication and mixed-reality (real/virtual/augmented) interaction, so to achieve long-term engagement with the user. The virtual coach personalization will be achieved by a reasoning machine system, aiming to reduce the osteoporosis-related risks and provide useful coaching to patients (whenever/wherever they need), for increasing their wellness. The key elements of OsteoMentor will constructively contribute to active and healthy ageing.
