I was born and raised in a home immersed in the law; my mother was a highly-talented legal secretary, and my stepfather had been part of a years-long case against the government.
When we weren’t working in the law, we were nonetheless fascinated by it. TV shows like Perry Mason, The Defenders, Divorce Court, and For the People were of great attraction to us, and especially me.
Over family dinners and between Mr. Mason’s courtroom quips, I sat, and I learned. My mother would regale us with tales from the trenches of her day job, and my father would discuss minute and procedural details that made every difference in his case. Later on, our family was sadly involved in another stressful lawsuit. As we were pushed to the brink, I realized just how important it is to have good lawyers and paralegals on your side.
With that background, it was not surprising that I enrolled in law school and obtained a Juris Doctor degree to pursue my business interests. After a few years in that world, I decided to put my J.D. to work. In January of 1986, I began my first official paralegal job, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Over the years, my career has taken me through a variety of fields of practice and taught me many valuable lessons. I have been able to utilize my skills in full-time, permanent, temporary, contract, and freelance work.
Over that time, with the aid of a few kindly colleagues and far too much trial and error, I came to understand just how things and people worked in legal environments. I learned from my mistakes, some costly and others merely frustrating, and in these writings I have brought together my most prized lessons for you.
The books I will publish are based on my experience, and their purpose is to share helpful hints, shortcuts, and hacks with you, my fellow paralegals. My hope is that these practical books will help you better understand and better enjoy your work as paralegals.
